Work to be accomplished, whether roughing or finishing, will determine type of teeth and coarseness for each application.Most American pattern files are available with 3 grades of cut: bastard-cut, second-cut and smooth-cut
American Pattern - The degree of coarseness is greater in longer files, but differences between bastard, second and smooth are proportionateBastard Cut - A coarse file designed for fast removal of stock material
2nd Cut - A medium file designed for moderate stock removalSmooth Cut - A fine file designed for making an almost smooth surface
Swiss pattern files are available in seven cuts: No. 00, 0,1, 2, 3, 4, and 6Swiss Pattern 00 number being most aggressive - 6 Least aggressive
All Files = Length is measured exclusive of tang, from point to heel,unless specified otherwiseDesired stroke length, type of material and size will determine length required

5-1/2" Swiss pattern needle file Knife 0 cut
Knife shaped, cross section that is tapered in width and thickness. Edge has same thickness from point to shoulder. Used in slots, wedge or v shaped openings such as gear teeth. The included angle of the sharp edge is Approximately 10 degrees. Double cut on both sides – Top edge is safe – Knife edge is single cut.
